Water Heater Maintenance in Utah: When to Flush and When to Leave It Alone
Your water heater is one of the most important systems in your home, and in Utah, it works hard.
Because of Utah’s hard water, sediment can build up inside the tank over time. That sediment can reduce the amount of hot water available, make the water heater less efficient, and eventually contribute to failure.
During my conversation with Tim from Quick Quality Plumbing, he explained that water heater maintenance can be helpful, but timing matters.
If a water heater is newer and has been maintained consistently, flushing it once a year may help keep sediment from building up. In Utah, where mineral content is high, regular maintenance can be especially valuable.
However, if you do not know the last time your water heater was flushed, or you know it has been several years, flushing it may actually create problems. Tim explained that disturbing an older, poorly maintained tank can potentially damage the lining and lead to leaks or rust.
That was one of the most practical takeaways from the walkthrough.
Sometimes maintenance is wise.
Sometimes monitoring and planning for replacement is the better choice.
Signs your water heater may need attention include:
Less hot water than usual
Rust-colored water
Water near the base of the tank
Strange noises
Age approaching 8 to 10 years
No known maintenance history
Visible corrosion
For Utah homeowners, especially those with older systems, it may be worth having a plumber take a look before deciding whether to flush, repair, or replace the water heater.
