Water Hammer in Utah Homes: What That Banging Sound May Mean

by Judy Kostrencich

This post is part of my Utah Homeowner Maintenance Series, created to help Salt Lake City and Park City homeowners protect their homes, preserve equity, and avoid expensive surprises. I recently invited Tim from Quick Quality Plumbing to walk through my own home and share practical plumbing tips every Utah homeowner should know.

Have you ever heard a banging or knocking sound in your pipes when the washing machine runs?

That may be water hammer.

During my plumbing walkthrough with Tim from Quick Quality Plumbing, we talked about water hammer in high-consumption areas like laundry rooms. Tim explained that hammer arrestors can help give the force or air movement somewhere to go so it does not continue hammering through the pipes.

Water hammer can happen when water flow suddenly stops or changes direction, creating pressure waves inside the plumbing system.

Common places homeowners notice water hammer include:

Laundry rooms
Dishwashers
Irrigation lines
Bathrooms
Utility rooms
Areas with quick-closing valves

In some cases, a hammer arrestor can be a relatively simple fix. Tim explained that some washer boxes have hammer arrestors built in, and in other cases, adapters can be installed near the washing machine connections.

While it may seem like just an annoying noise, it is worth paying attention to. Repeated pressure shocks can stress pipes and fittings over time.

If your home has banging pipes, especially in the laundry room, it may be worth having a plumber take a look.
